You know what, folks, it's gone midnight here and it's now August 1st. So I have to say, happy birthday, Jerry. I love you, big guy. You changed my life and I can't thank you enough for that.

I have spent my life
Seeking all that's still unsung
Bent my ear to hear the tune
And closed my eyes to see
When there were no strings to play
You played to me.

Who the hell is this Captain Trips? Does he have a boat or fly a plane? Oh, wait: that's what my dad asked me after reading a article on the S.F. bands and their weird names in the Wall Street Journal in 1967. He called the boys "The Ungrateful Living." I swear to whatever you hold holy that those words made it clear that I would have to seek out this Captain Trips fellow and his Ungrateful cohorts.

You know--he hated that moniker about as much as Bill G. hated Uncle Bobo.

I don't know who he is either but I have a 100 ton captain's license certified by US Coast Guard. Do I qualify?

Definitely on a ship of fools looking for the dog star so we don't become lost sailors and make it to the promised land.

Speaking of which the dog star is Sirius in case anyone was wondering. We use it for navigation but not so much as in the past. But we take readings everyday and the dog star is important.

"Ungrateful Living"-My own Daddy said that at least a time or two, and thought he was being damned clever when he did. God, I miss him and Mom. Thanks for giving me a smile by sharing that.

The other day they waited, the sky was dark and faded,
Solemnly they stated, "He has to die, you know he has to die."
All the children learnin', from books that they were burnin',
Every leaf was turnin', to watch him die, you know he had to die.

The summer sun looked down on him,
His mother could but frown on him,
And all the other sound on him,
He had to die, you know he had to die.
